When following a HIIT routine, the American College of Sports Medicine suggests, your “full effort” bursts should range from five seconds to eight minutes and be performed at 80 percent to 95 percent of your maximum heart rate. The recovery intervals in-between are often double but can be up to 5 times longer if you’re just starting out. Try a 20-30 second burst followed by double or triple the recovery time and repeat 4 times. You can always scale up or down to suit and don’t forget to warm-up and cool-down with a few minutes of gentle cycling.
HIIT cycling can be achieved using either high resistance or high speed, what matters most is that you really crank things up so it’s difficult and you’re giving it 100% for quick bursts. Your short-lived full-power hill climbs or sprints are rewarded with recovery intervals that are usually at least double the duration to catch your breath.
Both regular moderate-intensity cycling and HIIT can result in weight loss. However, the big plus with HIIT is how little time it takes, according to results collated in 2019 from 22 scientific research papers.
