Winter has had us all rugged up in PJs, on the lounge and eating comfort food, but we’re not far off spring and that means losing a few layers of clothing. If you’re a little slow at coming out of your hibernation, here are a few tips to get motivated for your body’s spring clean. It’s time to shake off winter and slip into spring.
Re-establish a routine
Winter is full of guilty pleasures like staying up too late, marshmallows in hot chocolates with a side block of chocolate, and eating big hearty meals in front of the TV. But now that spring is around the corner again you need to get back into a regular sleep and training schedule. Plus, start cleaning out your fridge and cupboards of all the temptations!! Remember, if you haven't been working out much during winter, then it’s unrealistic to think you'll do outdoor cardio exercises for 30 minutes a day, six days a week straight away. You’re more likely to get frustrated and give up on your workout program. Set small goals and try and get into a manageable routine again.
Sometimes treating yourself to a new top, some new joggers or pair of tights can get you excited to train or motivated to keep going. You don’t have to spend lots of money, there’s nothing like a bargain to make you smile. It’s just the act of recommitting to your new goals, you might not be in the dress size you want to be in right now but it says to yourself that you’re on your way to it. This is not a moment to feel bad, it’s a time to feel empowered!!
It’s so easy to let ourselves off the hook, especially in winter when it’s so much warmer in bed. Now that spring is coming, you have to make it harder to go against your goals! Do something today that will limit your ability to give in like taking out all of the food temptations in your house or planning workouts with your friends so you’re accountable. If you do your workouts of a morning or exercise at work, then getting your gear organised early is something you don’t have to think about in the morning so you don’t ruin your motivation. Anything to make it harder for you to give in is going to help you stay committed and motivated to work on that spring body.
Do what you love
Fitness should be fun!! Keeping fitness as a regular part of your life means that it is a complete lifestyle choice and if you’re not having fun then you won’t be motivated to follow through. You don’t need to be stuck in a gym every day, you can train from the comfort of your own home or if you love being outdoors, try outdoor training options like hiking, cycling and swimming. If you love to dance, take up some classes and use that as your fitness base.
Forcing yourself to do something you hate will make it harder to follow through and commit to each day and you will find excuses not to do it. Mix things up with new activities, locations or exercises like strength training.
Know your energy cycles
Not all of us are morning people. You have to be aware of your natural energy cycles and exercise during those times. If you’re struggling in the mornings then try exercising during your lunch break or after work. If you’re up and out early then get your workouts in before you get to work to start your day. If you’re dragging yourself into an exercise you’re less likely to be thinking about the proper form or technique and chances are you’re not getting all of the benefits.
Think of where you want to be
You really can have the body that you want. You’ve seen enough before and after photos and read enough testimonials to know that your future self is really just waiting to be revealed. The body that you’re after is there and it’s achievable if you want it bad enough and if you’re willing to put in the work. Think of what you might look or feel like if you made the changes and put in the work. Now think of how you will look and feel if you don’t. Which future is more appealing to you? Keep that vision in your mind before you hit the snooze button. Keep it in your mind as you train and think about your current decisions and how they affect your future self.
