Workout wear for women are the new jeans, with neon sports bras the latest "it" accessory. Blame it on the push by many Australians towards a more active lifestyle, or call it an extension of the nation's fascination with fashion.

Even Stella McCartney has integrated track suit pants into her 2014 urban-wear sports outfits. What's more proof than that!

But if you want your workout wear to work for you in public there are some rules you need to follow.

  1. There can be a time and place. Main reason for choosing and wearing workout wear throughout your day, should be to motivate you to live an active life. Reducing the number of excuses you might be telling yourself and increase the ease of going to the gym or working out at home.
  2. Select your attire carefully. What you wear will need to be functional and practical. And don't forget to check the dress code of your workplace before making this change!
  3. If you are going to wear lycra for long periods, try to select clothing made from cotton. This can allow your skin to breathe easier.
  4. Make sure the items of clothing you select are quality pieces that will wash and wear well. They may be comfortable, but they also need to live up to the task of everyday demands and more frequent washing.
