Five treadmill exercises to ramp up your workout

Cardio workouts are a great way to get the heart pumping and stay fit and healthy. However, a treadmill is also predominantly focused on the legs and cardiovascular system. For a full rounded workout – particularly if you are looking at shifting weight – you usually have to complete a number of different exercises. But there is an alternative. With a few simple moves, you can ramp up your treadmill session and get a full body workout all in one.

1. Dumbbell curls

Usually do some cardio then some weights? Why not combine the two for a super workout! Choose some dumbbells one weight smaller than usual and use them to complete bicep curls while walking briskly on the treadmill. This workout is not about going fast and hard, but rather doing things slowly and with stamina, working your arms and legs for as long as possible.

2. Chicken wing

Using the same dumbbells and walking sideways, hold the dumbbells at your side. Bring them up horizontally, as though you have wings and hold. Bring them down again slowly after 10 seconds. Set the treadmill pace a bit slower as this can be a little awkward to get used to.

3. Heat it up

Most have read about how building up a sweat can detoxify the body. Ramp it up while jogging on the treadmill by adding layers. If the treadmill is in your own home, close the doors and windows and turn the air conditioner off. This exercise is about going in short bursts, as the heat can be dangerous. Usually 10 minutes is enough when at a brisk walk. Focus on sweating it up without feeling faint.

4. Sidestepping

Stand sideways like in the chicken wing exercise, but up the pace to a jog. Sideways running is great for targeting muscles that would otherwise be doing little work while running forwards. Start slow and speed it up as you get used to the workout.

5. Turn up the music

Music is not only fun, but a great way to get the blood pumping. Rather than running on the treadmill, plug in some tunes and dance! Obviously not every dance routine will work, but choreography that focuses on the arms and simple leg movements are a great way to exercise the whole body.
