Getting kids active

We’ve all heard about the rising epidemic of childhood obesity. The reality is once a child is overweight or obese it is unlikely that they will spontaneously revert to a healthy weight, predisposing them to serious health concerns as adults.

So here are a few ideas to get the little ones moving throughout the day:

  • Play outdoors, ride their bikes and walk to school when possible.
  • Suggest they earn some pocket money by doing chores around the house, or for neighbours.
  • Get them to take the dog for a walk – or the neighbours’ dog, if you don’t have one.
  • Send them to the park with their friends to play.
  • Take them to swim at the local pool or beach. Or even better, enroll them in swimming lessons.
  • If you own fitness equipment at home, encourage them to use it too. Make a game out of it by challenging either you or another family member to see who can reach their fitness goal first.

Encourage kids to take part in aerobic exercise for at least 20 minutes at a time. Talk to them about their interests and what sport or activity they’d like to engage in. For regular exercise and fun with friends, try organised sports and activities, such as soccer, tennis, cricket, rugby, hockey, dancing, netball or athletics – whatever takes their fancy.

Active kids are more likely to become active adults, so teach them to enjoy it now!
